FAQ

  • What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health profession, using manual therapy. It diagnoses, treats and prevents disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system consists of the bones, joints, muscles and ligaments. It is these structures that allow your body to move whilst remaining strong and stable. Chiropractic also looks at the effects of these disorders on your nervous system and general health. That is why Chiropractic treatment focuses on your spine, which houses your spinal cord. Treatment can consist of many techniques, of which spinal adjustment is most commonly used by chiropractors.
  • Can anyone have Chiropractic treatment?
Chiropractic is suitable for nearly anyone, including manual- & office-workers, sports enthusiasts, expectant mothers and newborn babies, right up to the elderly. Adapting the treatment and techniques used in a treatment session, means that everyone receives the best outcome at each appointment.
  • Is everybody’s treatment the same?
No, your treatment plan is tailored just for you. It will be adapted to your individual needs, preferences and lifestyle.
  • How long does treatment take?
Your initial consultation appointment lasts approximately 1 hour. Follow-up appointments take up to 20 minutes, depending upon the treatment/s you need.
  • How often will I need to come for chiropractic treatment?
This depends on several factors including: your condition and it’s severity. how long you’ve had this condition. how your body responds to treatment (this changes with age and fitness level); and on doing your ‘homework’ i.e. how much of your chiropractor’s advice you follow. It is important to keep your appointments and have regular treatment in order to keep improving. Following our advice will give you the optimum and quickest positive outcome. • Will the treatment hurt?
Chiropractic treatment is usually painless. But if your muscles are in spasm then you may experience some tenderness. We do our utmost to ensure your treatment is comfortable by using alternative techniques, when appropriate. Occasionally you may feel some discomfort or stiffness after treatment. We will give you some advice to help reduce this discomfort during your appointment.
  • What is the ‘popping’ noise?
Chiropractic treatment aims to increase the function of the joints in your body. Most of the time this means increasing the amount of movement of the joint in question. As joints go through their ‘full range of motion’, some of the gas in the joint forms a tiny bubble. The ‘popping’ (aka ‘cracking’) noise happens as the bubble forms. It is a natural phenomenon and does not hurt.
  • Why should I return for treatment if I feel fine?
Treating you has allowed your body to heal and function better. Despite this, a long-standing injury or repeating activities that caused your complaint in the first place, may result in your original complaint returning. In such cases, regular treatment will reduce the likelihood and severity of other episodes. Research has shown that regular check-ups, like you do for the dentist or an MoT on your car, help keep any future episodes to a minimum.
  • Have I got a “trapped nerve” or “slipped disc”?
These terms give a broad diagnosis. So, in order for us to give you a clear idea of your condition we take a full history and examine you. Then we will tell you what we have found.
  • Do I have to pay for treatment?
You will need to pay for your treatment each time you come in. So, to reclaim your costs from your private medical insurance, you will need to liase directly with your insurance provider.
  • What is the General Chiropractic Council (GCC)?
The GCC is the body established by Parliament to regulate the chiropractic profession under the Chiropractors Act 1994. Because of this, it is a criminal offence to be called a Chiropractor if you are not registered with the GCC.
  • What is the British Chiropractic Association (BCA)?
Chiropractors in the UK have the choice of membership to several Chiropractic associations. The largest and longest-standing association in the UK is the BCA. Each member of the BCA has proven they are educated to international standards and have the highest levels of training and conduct.
